Over the years, the band went through several lineup changes, with Cummings becoming the lead vocalist in the late 1960s.

The Guess Who achieved international success and were one of the first Canadian bands to have a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with "American Woman" in 1970. They were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1987 and received a star on Canada's Walk of Fame in 2001.
