The Heartbeats were an American doo-wop group formed in 1957 in Queens, New York. The original members included William "Wally" Roker, Albert Crump, Robbie Tatum, Vernon Sievers, and James Sheppard. They were known for their smooth harmonies and romantic ballads, such as their hit song "A Thousand Miles Away" which peaked at number 5 on the R&B charts in 1957.
The Heartbeats were signed to the Rama label and later to Roulette Records, where they continued to release singles throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s. Despite their short-lived success, The Heartbeats left a lasting impact on the doo-wop genre and are remembered as one of the influential groups of their time.
