Artist Bio:
The Highwaymen were a group of African American artists based in Florida who gained popularity in the 1950s and 1960s for their vibrant landscape paintings. The group was formed by Alfred Hair and Harold Newton, and later included other artists such as Al Black, Mary Ann Carroll, and James Gibson. The Highwaymen were known for their distinctive style of painting Florida's natural landscapes, often featuring swaying palm trees, serene beaches, and colorful sunsets.

The Highwaymen artists were largely self-taught and faced discrimination during the era of segregation, selling their paintings door-to-door or on the side of the road to make a living. Their work has since gained recognition for its historical significance and artistic merit, with collectors appreciating the group's contributions to American art history. Today, Highwaymen paintings are sought after by collectors and are displayed in museums and galleries across the country.
