Artist Bio:
The Highwaymen were a group of African American artists from Florida who gained popularity in the 1950s and 1960s. The group was established by Alfred Hair and Harold Newton in the Jim Crow-era South, where opportunities for black artists were limited. The Highwaymen initially painted Florida landscapes, particularly scenes of the Everglades, using vivid colors and quick brushstrokes.

The group is known for their prolific output, with each artist producing hundreds of paintings to sell door-to-door, at roadside stands, and in galleries. Their artwork is characterized by vibrant colors, dramatic skies, and a sense of movement. Despite facing discrimination and limited opportunities, The Highwaymen persevered and their work has since gained recognition for its cultural and historical significance. Today, their paintings are highly sought after by collectors and have been displayed in museums and galleries across the United States.
