Artist Bio:
The Highwaymen were a group of African American artists from Florida who gained popularity in the 1950s and 1960s for their vivid landscape paintings. The group originally consisted of 26 artists who painted Florida's natural beauty, often featuring lush palm trees, serene beaches, and vibrant sunsets. The Highwaymen were known for their distinctive style of using quick brushstrokes and bold colors to capture the essence of the Florida landscape.
The artists sold their paintings door-to-door, out of car trunks, and along highways, hence the name "Highwaymen." Despite facing racial segregation and discrimination during the Jim Crow era, the group managed to achieve commercial success by selling their artwork to hotels, offices, and individuals. Today, The Highwaymen are recognized for their contribution to American art history and their unique role in capturing the beauty of Florida's landscapes.
