Artist Bio:
The Highwaymen were a group of African American artists from Florida who gained fame in the 1950s and 1960s for their vivid landscape paintings. The group originally consisted of 26 members, but is most closely associated with Alfred Hair, Harold Newton, and R. A. McLendon. They are known for their unique style of painting Florida's natural beauty, often depicting lush landscapes, fiery sunsets, and swaying palm trees.
The Highwaymen artists faced discrimination and limited opportunities due to their race, so they sold their artwork door-to-door and out of the trunks of their cars. Despite these challenges, their paintings became highly sought after and are now considered iconic examples of Florida's mid-century landscape art. The Highwaymen's work has since been recognized for its historical and cultural significance, and their legacy continues to inspire artists and collectors.
