The group originally consisted of lead singer Jerry Butler, Curtis Mayfield, Sam Gooden, Fred Cash, and Arthur and Richard Brooks. The Impressions are known for their smooth soulful harmonies and socially conscious lyrics, combining elements of gospel, doo-wop, and R&B in their music.


The group had a string of hits in the 1960s, including songs like "People Get Ready," "Keep on Pushing," and "Amen." Their music often reflected the Civil Rights Movement and they became known for their uplifting and inspirational lyrics. The Impressions were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991, recognizing their significant contributions to soul music and their lasting impact on the music industry.
