Artist Bio:
The Impressions are an American music group that originated in Chicago, Illinois in the late 1950s. The group was originally formed as The Roosters by lead singer Jerry Butler and brothers Arthur and Richard Brooks. Over the years, the lineup changed and eventually settled with members Fred Cash, Sam Gooden, and Curtis Mayfield. The group is best known for their soulful and gospel-infused sound, as well as their socially conscious lyrics that addressed issues such as civil rights and black empowerment.
The Impressions achieved commercial success with hits such as "People Get Ready," "Keep on Pushing," and "Amen." They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1991 and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2003. Curtis Mayfield also had a successful solo career and is considered one of the greatest songwriters of his time. The Impressions' influence on soul music and their contributions to the civil rights movement have solidified their legacy as one of the most important musical groups in American history.
