The Jazz Crusaders were an American jazz group formed in Houston, Texas, in 1960. Originally known as The Nighthawks, the group changed their name to The Jazz Crusaders in 1961. The original members included Joe Sample on piano, Wilton Felder on saxophone, Nesbert "Stix" Hooper on drums, and Wayne Henderson on trombone. Over the years, the group went through various lineup changes and released numerous albums.
The Jazz Crusaders were known for their soulful and funky style of jazz, blending elements of hard bop, soul jazz, and R&B. They were pioneers in the jazz fusion movement of the 1970s, incorporating electric instruments and funk rhythms into their music. The group achieved commercial success with albums like "Old Socks, New Shoes, New Socks, Old Shoes" and "Scratch." In 1971, they dropped "Jazz" from their name and became known simply as The Crusaders.
