The Main Ingredient was an American soul and R&B group formed in Harlem, New York, in 1964. The group was originally known as The Poets and consisted of lead singer Donald McPherson, Luther Simmons Jr., and Tony Silvester. After a few lineup changes, the group found success in the early 1970s with the addition of Cuba Gooding Sr. as lead vocalist. Their music was characterized by smooth harmonies and soulful melodies, with hits such as "Everybody Plays the Fool" and "Just Don't Want to Be Lonely" becoming signature songs for the group.
