The original members were George "Smitty" Smith, Edward "Sonny" Bivins, Winfred "Blue" Lovett, Kenny "Wally" Kelley, and Richard Taylor. Over the years, the group underwent several lineup changes, with Gerald Alston becoming the lead singer in the 1970s.
The Manhattans are best known for their smooth, soulful sound and romantic ballads. They achieved mainstream success in the 1970s and 1980s with hits like "Kiss and Say Goodbye," "Shining Star," and "Just the Lonely Talking Again."
