The Marvelettes were an American girl group formed in Inkster, Michigan, in 1960. They were one of the first successful acts of Motown Records and achieved major success in the early 1960s with their hit song "Please Mr. Postman," which became their first #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1961. The group's lineup consisted of Gladys Horton, Katherine Anderson, Georgeanna Tillman, Wanda Young, and Juanita Cowart.
The Marvelettes released a string of successful singles throughout the 1960s, including "Playboy," "Beechwood 4-5789," and "Don't Mess with Bill." They were known for their strong harmonies and soulful vocal performances. The group disbanded in the 1970s after several lineup changes and member departures. The Marvelettes were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004 in recognition of their contributions to the music industry.
