The Marvelettes were an American girl group that achieved popularity in the early 1960s. They were formed in Inkster, Michigan, in 1960 and signed with Motown's Tamla label. The group's original lineup consisted of Gladys Horton, Katherine Anderson, Georgeanna Tillman, Juanita Cowart, and Georgia Dobbins. They are best known for their hit single "Please Mr. Postman," which topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1961, making them the first Motown act to reach the number one position. The Marvelettes continued to release successful singles throughout the 1960s, including "Don't Mess with Bill" and "The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game."
Despite numerous lineup changes over the years, The Marvelettes remained active until the early 1970s. They were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004 in recognition of their contributions to the music industry. The Marvelettes are considered one of the pioneering girl groups of the Motown sound and have left a lasting impact on the music industry.
