Artist Bio:
The Marvelettes were an American girl group formed in the early 1960s. They were best known for their hit song "Please Mr. Postman," which was the first Motown recording to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The group was originally formed in Inkster, Michigan, and included members Gladys Horton, Katherine Anderson, Georgeanna Tillman, Juanita Cowart, and Wanda Young. They were one of the first successful acts to be signed to the Motown label.
The Marvelettes released a string of successful singles throughout the 1960s, including "Playboy," "Beechwood 4-5789," and "Don't Mess with Bill." They were known for their catchy melodies, tight harmonies, and energetic performances. The group disbanded in the 1970s after several lineup changes, but their impact on the music industry as one of the pioneering girl groups of the Motown sound remains significant.
