The Marvelettes were an American girl group formed in Inkster, Michigan in 1960. They were one of the early successful acts signed to the Motown record label and achieved major success with their hit single "Please Mr. Postman" in 1961, which became Motown's first number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song also made The Marvelettes the first Motown act to have a number-one hit on the pop charts.
The group continued to release a string of successful singles throughout the 1960s, including "Don't Mess with Bill" and "The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game". The Marvelettes were known for their distinctive harmonies and soulful vocals, and they were influential in paving the way for future girl groups in the music industry. They were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2005.
