The group's original lineup consisted of Gladys Horton, Katherine Anderson, Georgeanna Tillman, Juanita Cowart, and Georgia Dobbins. Over the years, the group saw some changes in its members, but they continued to produce music and perform together.

The Marvelettes were signed to Motown Records and were one of the label's first successful acts. They were known for their catchy tunes and harmonious vocals that helped define the Motown sound.
