The Marvelettes were an American girl group formed in 1960 in Inkster, Michigan. They were best known for their hit single "Please Mr. Postman," which topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1961, making them the first Motown act to reach number one. The group consisted of members Gladys Horton, Katherine Anderson, Georgeanna Tillman, Wanda Young, and Juanita Cowart.
The Marvelettes achieved early success with a series of hits in the 1960s, including "Don't Mess with Bill" and "Beechwood 4-5789." They were one of Motown's first successful acts and paved the way for future girl groups. The group disbanded in the late 1960s, but their influence on the music industry continues to be felt today.
