The Marvelettes were an American girl group formed in Inkster, Michigan in 1960. They were one of the early successful acts signed to the Motown record label and are best known for their hit song "Please Mr. Postman," which topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1961. The group consisted of members Gladys Horton, Katherine Anderson, Georgeanna Tillman, Juanita Cowart, and Wanda Young, with Horton serving as the lead vocalist on many of their songs.
The Marvelettes were pioneers in the girl group genre and helped pave the way for future female vocal groups. Throughout the 1960s, they released a string of successful singles including "Playboy," "Beechwood 4-5789," and "Don't Mess with Bill." The group disbanded in the late 1960s, but their music continues to be celebrated and remembered as an important part of Motown's early history.
