The group's name was inspired by the Cleveland radio disc jockey Eddie O'Jay. The O'Jays are known for their soulful vocal harmonies and socially conscious lyrics, which often addressed issues of love, politics, and social justice.

The O'Jays achieved mainstream success in the 1970s with hits like "Back Stabbers," "Love Train," and "For the Love of Money."
