The Platters were one of the first African American groups to be accepted as a major chart group and were pioneers in the crossover of R&B and pop music.
The group's biggest hits included songs like "Only You," "The Great Pretender," and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes." They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1998. Despite various lineup changes over the years, The Platters continued to perform and record music, leaving a lasting legacy in the history of popular music.
