The Pyramids were an American avant-garde jazz group formed in the mid-1960s in California. The group was known for their experimental and innovative approach to music, blending elements of free jazz, spiritual jazz, and world music. The original lineup of The Pyramids consisted of saxophonist Idris Ackamoor, bassist Kimathi Asante, and drummer Donald Robinson.
The Pyramids released their debut album, "Lalibela," in 1973, which received critical acclaim for its unique fusion of African rhythms, free jazz improvisation, and cosmic textures. The group disbanded in the late 1970s but reunited in the 21st century, with Ackamoor leading a new incarnation of The Pyramids. They continue to perform and record music that pushes the boundaries of jazz and explores new sonic territories.
