The Shins are an American indie rock band formed in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1996. The band's current lineup consists of James Mercer (vocals, guitar, songwriter), Yuuki Matthews (bass guitar), Mark Watrous (guitar), Casey Foubert (guitar), and Jon Sortland (drums). Over the years, the band has seen several lineup changes with Mercer being the only consistent member.
The Shins gained mainstream popularity with their acclaimed albums "Oh, Inverted World" (2001) and "Chutes Too Narrow" (2003). Their single "New Slang" from "Oh, Inverted World" gained widespread attention after being featured in the film "Garden State." The band's music is characterized by Mercer's introspective lyrics and catchy melodies, with influences ranging from 1960s pop to alternative rock. The Shins' most recent album, "The Worm's Heart," was released in 2018.
