The Showmen were an American soul vocal group that was formed in Norfolk, Virginia in the early 1960s. The group consisted of members General Norman Johnson, Milton Wells, Dorsey Porter, Leslie Felton, and Earl Johnson. They are best known for their hit song "It Will Stand," which was released in 1961 and reached number 61 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The Showmen's music is characterized by their infectious rhythm and blues sound, combined with tight vocal harmonies.
Despite their initial success with "It Will Stand," The Showmen disbanded in the mid-1960s. General Norman Johnson went on to have a successful career as a songwriter and performer, eventually becoming the lead singer of the soul group Chairmen of the Board. The Showmen's music has since been recognized for its influence on the development of soul music in the 1960s.
