The Smashing Pumpkins are an American alternative rock band formed in Chicago in 1988. The band's original lineup consisted of Billy Corgan (vocals, guitar), James Iha (guitar), D'arcy Wretzky (bass), and Jimmy Chamberlin (drums). They gained widespread recognition in the 1990s with their distinctive sound blending elements of grunge, heavy metal, and dream pop.

The Smashing Pumpkins released their debut album, "Gish," in 1991, followed by their breakthrough album, "Siamese Dream," in 1993. They achieved mainstream success with the release of "Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness" in 1995, which spawned several hit singles and earned the band multiple Grammy nominations. The band went on to release several more albums, experiencing various lineup changes over the years. Despite these changes, Billy Corgan has remained the driving force behind the band, leading to their continued influence on the alternative rock genre.
