The Staple Singers were an American gospel, soul, and R&B group formed in 1948 by patriarch Roebuck "Pops" Staples and consisting of his children Cleotha, Pervis, Yvonne, and Mavis. They are known for their socially conscious lyrics and blending gospel with soul and R&B music. The Staple Singers gained prominence in the 1970s with hits like "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There," which showcased their unique sound and Mavis Staples' powerful vocals. They were also active in the civil rights movement, performing at events like the historic March on Washington in 1963. The Staple Singers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 and continued to make music together until Pops Staples passed away in 2000.
