The Staple Singers were an American gospel, soul, and R&B singing group formed in 1948 by Roebuck "Pops" Staples and his children Cleotha, Pervis, and Mavis. Their music blended gospel, soul, and folk to create a unique sound that was both spiritually uplifting and socially conscious. The group gained popularity in the 1960s and 1970s with hits such as "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There."
The Staple Singers were known for their close harmonies and Pops Staples' distinctive guitar playing. They were also active in the civil rights movement, performing at events such as the March on Washington in 1963. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 and received a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award in 2005.
