The Staple Singers were an American gospel, soul, and R&B group formed in 1948 by Roebuck "Pops" Staples and his children. Originally from Mississippi, the group consisted of Pops Staples, Cleotha Staples, Pervis Staples, and Mavis Staples. They are best known for their socially conscious lyrics and blend of gospel, soul, and rhythm and blues music.
The Staple Singers gained fame in the 1960s and 1970s with hits such as "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There." They were also prominent figures in the civil rights movement, performing at rallies and marches alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.
