The Tokens were an American doo-wop vocal group formed in 1955 in Brooklyn, New York. The group consisted of members Neil Sedaka, Hank Medress, Eddie Rabkin, and Cynthia Zolotin. They are best known for their hit single "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1961. The song is a cover of a South African Zulu folk song titled "Mbube" originally written by Solomon Linda. The Tokens' version of the song has since been covered by numerous artists and featured in various movies and commercials.
In addition to their success with "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," The Tokens also had other charting singles, including "Tonight I Fell In Love" and "I Hear Trumpets Blow." The group continued to perform and record music throughout the 1960s and 1970s, and they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004. The Tokens' music has left a lasting impact on the doo-wop genre and continues to be enjoyed by audiences today.
