Artist Bio:
The Velvelettes were an American girl group formed in 1961 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The original members were Carolyn Gill, Bertha Barbee-McNeal, Norma Barbee, and Betty Kelly. They were signed to Motown's VIP label in 1962 and released their debut single, "There He Goes," which achieved moderate success on the charts.
The group is best known for their hit song "Needle in a Haystack," which was released in 1964 and became one of their signature songs. The Velvelettes continued to release music throughout the 1960s, with songs like "He Was Really Sayin' Somethin'" and "A Bird in the Hand" gaining popularity. Although they never reached the same level of success as some of their Motown labelmates, The Velvelettes are remembered as an important part of the girl group sound of the 1960s.
