Thelma Carpenter was an American jazz singer and actress born in Brooklyn, New York in 1922. She began her career as a vocalist in the 1940s, performing with various jazz bands and orchestras, including the Count Basie Orchestra. Carpenter gained recognition for her powerful voice and dynamic stage presence, often compared to jazz greats like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan.


In addition to her music career, Thelma Carpenter also appeared in several films and Broadway productions. She is best known for her role as Miss One in the original Broadway production of "The Wiz" in 1975, for which she received critical acclaim. Carpenter continued to perform and record music throughout her career, leaving a lasting impact on the jazz and Broadway communities. She passed away in 1997 at the age of 74.
