The band's name comes from an Australian Aboriginal custom of sleeping with a dingo on cold nights for warmth, with the coldest being a "three dog night." The band gained popularity in the late 1960s and 1970s with their unique sound that combined rock, pop, and rhythm and blues elements. They are known for their powerful vocals and harmonies, which were a trademark of their music.


Three Dog Night had numerous hit songs, including "Joy to the World," "One," "Mama Told Me (Not to Come)," and "Black and White." They had 21 consecutive Top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making them one of the most successful bands of their era.
