Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were an American rock band formed in 1976 in Gainesville, Florida. The band consisted of Tom Petty (lead vocalist and guitarist), Mike Campbell (lead guitarist), Benmont Tench (keyboardist), Ron Blair (bassist), and Stan Lynch (drummer). They were known for their classic rock sound with a touch of Southern rock and heartland rock influences.


Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released their self-titled debut album in 1976, which included hits like "Breakdown" and "American Girl." Throughout their career, they produced numerous hit songs, including "Refugee," "Don't Do Me Like That," and "Free Fallin'." The band became one of the best-selling music acts, selling over 80 million records worldwide. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Tom Petty passed away in 2017, but the legacy of the band and their music continues to live on.
