Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers were an American rock band formed in 1976 in Gainesville, Florida. The band's original lineup consisted of Tom Petty (vocals, guitar), Mike Campbell (lead guitar), Ron Blair (bass), Stan Lynch (drums), and Benmont Tench (keyboards). They gained popularity in the late 1970s with their blend of rock and roll and Southern rock, and are known for hits like "American Girl," "Refugee," and "Free Fallin'."


Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers released 13 studio albums, with their most successful being "Damn the Torpedoes" in 1979, which was certified triple platinum in the United States. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers continued to tour and record music until Petty's passing in 2017. Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers remain a beloved and influential band in the history of rock music.
