Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were an American rock band formed in 1976 in Gainesville, Florida. The band consisted of Tom Petty (vocals, guitar), Mike Campbell (lead guitar), Benmont Tench (keyboards), Ron Blair (bass), and Stan Lynch (drums). They gained fame for their roots rock sound and Petty's distinctive vocals.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released their self-titled debut album in 1976, which included the hit single "Breakdown." Over the years, they produced many successful albums, including "Damn the Torpedoes" (1979), "Full Moon Fever" (1989), and "Into the Great Wide Open" (1991). Some of their most popular songs include "American Girl," "Refugee," and "Free Fallin'." The band was known for their energetic live performances and continued to tour and record music until Tom Petty's passing in 2017. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.
