Van McCoy was an American musician, record producer, arranger, and songwriter born on January 6, 1940, in Washington, D.C. He is best known for his hit song "The Hustle," which topped the charts in 1975 and became a disco anthem. McCoy began his music career as a session musician and songwriter in the 1960s, working with artists like Gladys Knight & the Pips, The Shirelles, and Aretha Franklin.
In addition to his success with "The Hustle," Van McCoy had a prolific career as a producer and songwriter, working on numerous hits for other artists. He received a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for "The Hustle" in 1976. McCoy continued to work in the music industry until his untimely death on July 6, 1979, at the age of 39.
