Stephenson began his music career as a member of the band BlackHawk in the late 1980s, where he served as a lead vocalist and guitarist. The band achieved commercial success with hits such as "Goodbye Says It All" and "Every Once in a While."
In addition to his work with BlackHawk, Van Stephenson was also a successful songwriter, penning songs for artists like Kenny Rogers, Dan Seals, and Restless Heart. Some of his notable songwriting credits include "Modern Day Delilah" and "Meet Me in Montana." Stephenson released two solo albums, including his self-titled debut in 1981 and "Righteous Anger" in 1984. Van Stephenson's contributions to country music as both a performer and songwriter have left a lasting impact on the industry.
