She gained fame in the 1980s as the first African-American woman to be crowned Miss America in 1984. However, she resigned from the title due to a scandal involving unauthorized nude photographs being published in Penthouse magazine.
Following her pageant days, Williams pursued a successful career in entertainment. She released several albums, including her debut "The Right Stuff" in 1988, and starred in various films and television shows. Williams is perhaps best known for her role as Wilhelmina Slater on the popular TV series "Ugly Betty," which earned her three Emmy nominations.
