What Is This? was a short-lived American rock band formed in 1985 by guitarist Hillel Slovak, drummer Jack Irons, and bassist Flea, who would later achieve international fame as members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The band also included vocalist Alain Johannes and guitarist D.H. Peligro. They released their self-titled debut album in 1985, which featured a mix of punk, funk, and alternative rock elements. What Is This? disbanded in 1986 after only one album and a few live performances.
Despite their brief existence, What Is This? is considered an important part of the alternative rock scene of the 1980s, with their music showcasing the early talents of the musicians who would go on to achieve great success with other projects. Their music has been described as raw, energetic, and experimental, setting the stage for the eclectic sound that would become synonymous with the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
