Wild Cherry was an American funk rock band formed in 1970 in Ohio. The band is best known for their hit single "Play That Funky Music," released in 1976. The song was a major success, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and selling over two million copies. Wild Cherry's self-titled debut album, which featured "Play That Funky Music," also achieved commercial success, reaching platinum status.
Despite their initial success, Wild Cherry struggled to replicate the same level of commercial achievement with subsequent releases. The band eventually disbanded in the early 1980s. "Play That Funky Music" remains Wild Cherry's most popular and enduring song, often cited as a classic of the funk rock genre.
