Mitchell was a prominent figure in the Memphis soul scene, contributing greatly to the success of artists like Al Green, Ann Peebles, and Otis Clay.
In 1970, Mitchell founded his own record label, Hi Records, which became famous for its distinctive sound characterized by smooth grooves and lush orchestrations. His production work with Al Green in the 1970s produced a string of hits that remain classics in the soul genre, including "Let's Stay Together" and "Take Me to the River." Mitchell's contributions to soul music have left a lasting impact on the industry, solidifying his legacy as a talented musician and producer. He passed away on January 5, 2010, in Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of 81.
