He is best known for his work as a record producer and bandleader in the soul and R&B genres. Mitchell was a prominent figure in shaping the Memphis soul sound, often referred to as the "Hi Records sound." He owned and operated Royal Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, where he produced numerous hit records for artists such as Al Green, Ann Peebles, and Otis Clay.
Mitchell's distinctive production style combined elements of soul, funk, and rhythm and blues, characterized by his lush arrangements, tight rhythm sections, and use of horns. He was highly respected in the music industry for his ability to bring out the best in the artists he worked with, helping to create timeless classics that have had a lasting impact on popular music.
