He was best known for his work as a record producer at Hi Records in Memphis, where he played a significant role in shaping the careers of artists such as Al Green and Ann Peebles.
Mitchell's distinctive production style, characterized by lush arrangements, intricate rhythms, and a focus on horn sections, helped define the sound of Hi Records in the 1960s and 1970s. He produced a string of hit records, including Al Green's "Let's Stay Together" and "Love and Happiness," which became classics of the soul genre. Mitchell's contributions to the music industry were widely recognized, and he was inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2011.
