Elliman first gained recognition as a singer in the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, where she played the role of Mary Magdalene both on stage and in the film adaptation released in 1973. Her performance of the song "I Don't Know How to Love Him" from the musical became a hit and helped launch her music career.
